Class Description: This Orthodox Jewish Studies class introduces young students to the beauty and depth of Jewish heritage, history, and religious practice. Focusing on Hebrew language, Torah stories, Jewish values, and holidays, this curriculum is designed to foster a lifelong connection to Torah and mitzvot while building a love for learning and a strong Jewish identity.

Jewish Studies Components

  1. Hebrew Language:

    • Aleph Bet (Hebrew Alphabet): Recognizing, writing, and beginning to blend Hebrew letters with vowels to build basic reading skills.

    • Basic Vocabulary: Learning common Hebrew words and phrases to support comprehension and spoken language.

    • Tefillah (Prayer): Familiarizing students with daily prayers and blessings, including Modeh Ani, Shema, and selected parts of Birkas Hamazon.

  2. Chumash (Bible):

    • Stories from Bereishit (Genesis): Introduction to foundational stories such as Creation, Noah’s Ark, and Avraham’s journey.

    • Learning Pasuk by Pasuk: Exploring individual verses and understanding simple meanings, emphasizing Torah’s timeless lessons.

  3. Parashat HaShavua (Weekly Torah Portion):

    • Story and Themes: Age-appropriate discussions about the weekly Torah portion, focusing on values, lessons, and mitzvot (commandments) from each parsha.

    • Creative Expression: Using art, music, and drama to express and personalize lessons from the parsha.

  4. Jewish Holidays (Yamim Tovim):

    • Holiday Preparation and Themes: Understanding the historical context, customs, and significance of each holiday.

    • Rituals and Practices: Hands-on activities to experience the holiday spirit, such as creating a Chanukah menorah or decorating for Sukkot.

    • Songs and Blessings: Learning holiday-related songs and blessings to familiarize students with each holiday’s unique practices.

  5. Middot (Character Development):

    • Values and Ethics: Weekly lessons on Jewish values like honesty, kindness, and responsibility, with practical ways to apply them.

    • Classroom Culture of Chesed (Kindness): Encouraging acts of kindness and creating a supportive, thoughtful environment that aligns with Jewish teachings.
